The second album from whom, in my opinion is one of the best bands nowadays playing this kind of music. «Counterblast» is an inevitable feast of melodic ultra brutal death black metal blast. Our land-mates have released a complex yet ultra enjoyable death black hybrid, which takes a few spins to fully get the full breath of its brilliance. The death metal orientated guitar work and the multiple / different time signatures are both of the highest calibre, despite the obvious death metal filiations, The Reckoning (a little bit such as Behemoth in their «Satanica», «Thelema 6» period) stand on their own two feet in the black metal spirit: «Counterblast» is brutal, incredibly violent but brightly filled with creeping atmospheres (coming across like Morbid Angels mixed with the coldness of Behemoth). The vocals are strangely almost thrash metal orientated and increase the violent level of the whole product. With a special mention of the Terrorizer classic «Dead Shall Rise», I have no hesitation in recommending this to any lover of intelligent death black metal. This is simply Excellent.

Delivering the same intense yet singularly paced style of mechanically precise black/death metal akin to Krisiun, Zyklon or even Crionics and The Amenta (without the cyber elements), Belgium’s The Reckoning (formerly known as Infernal Legion) have delivered a solid second album, that won’t change the genre, but it’s a pummeling, relentless listen.
Truthfully, I really don’t need to expand on the above paragraph as Counterblast isn’t the kind of album to either gush over or berate, but it does serve as a 39 minutes of tightly played black/death (slightly heavier on the black) metal that’s above average, (at least for its first half before the intensity wears off) in its musicianship and delivery. Drummer Jurgen Sterckx (or “Morbid”) is a steady force behind the kit and vocalist Peter Noens (both also serving in black metal act Natrach) has an ample rasp/growl, culminating in 10 tracks of blissfully blasting tenacity. No interludes, no experimentation, no mercy.
Look no further than impressively fierce opener “Downward Discipline” for the template for the rest of the album and only the first few minutes of “Hellkind” and parts of the six minute “Bleed Divine” offers any sort of reprieve with a slow menacing lurch to break up the assault from the likes of “March to Your Death”, “Heap of Wretchedness”, “Vermicular”, “Nailed to Iniquity” and closing cover of Terrorizer’s “Dead Shall Rise”.
Hardly a required listen, but an acceptable release if you need to be blasted into pieces.

I have to say it again; you can call me a chauvinistic prick, but this year it's my own Belgian shithole coming up with the most noteworthy metal releases. Thus also The Reckoning of which "Counterblast" is their second and latest feat of arms. Just like the 2006 released "Deathlike Millennia" it's only top quality death metal being represented here – Having the same aggression, the same heavy, perfect sounding Hertz production (the ungodly Wieslawscy conspiracy) and again the same fuck-you-all-attitude. I can't wish anything else. Whether it’s the Vader inspired "March to your Death", the blackened "Hellkind" or the supreme grunt in "Vermicular", "Couterblast" does not disappoint at all. The cover version of Terrorizer's "Death shall Rise" is an extra kick in the groin that comes in nice. I've always liked Peter's different approach of singing. Instead of doing typical grunts, the vocalist/guitarist uses a harsh thrash metal throat switched into a deep grunt from time to time – More often than on "Deathlike Millennia". The Reckoning hardly takes some gas back and after nearly forty minutes judgment day is over. Only a post-apocalyptic silence remains. Aborted may be Belgium's most popular death metal squadron, The Reckoning are without doubt the best!

Dag moeder! The Reckoning heeft zonet mijn dag gemaakt. Weer zo een typisch Belgisch cd'tje voor in de tweedehandsbakken of aan halve prijs binnen de kortste keren, dacht ik vooraf te zullen moeten concluderen. Het viel me daarna in dat het album uit 2006, Deathlike Millennia, helemaal zo slecht nog niet was. De voormalige Infernal Legionairen, die het live steevast uitstekend deden, hadden een degelijk geluid vast en mochten er best wezen. Black en death met een Poolse Hertz productie, net als pizza en seks iets wat zelden tegenvalt. In het geval van Counterblast een heus understatement.
Miljaar zeg. Dit beestje gaat vooruit. De basis is nog steeds beresterke death metal, maar de zwarte lak maakt het nog verdo(r)vender. Snelheid, tempo, beuken. De productie doet je in een reflex denken aan bands als Vader en Decapitated, maar toch zit er meer in. De zwartgeblakerde machinaal klinkende drums (en dat is gepermitteerd want de strakheid is immens) en composities geven het album een extra dimensie en cumuleert de stijlen en energie van verschillende genre's, black, death en thrash. Om het met een simplistische one-liner te zeggen: Dit is de Poolse Zyklon uit België. En zelfs dat doet The Reckoning tekort. Bijvoorbeeld de zang op het album is niet de typische grafstem of mucovisidose-rochel, in plaats daarvan hoor je neothrashe wurgklanken die ongeforceerd hard en behoorlijk verstaanbaar uit de onderhoek komen. Hier kan ik absoluut mijn oren mee opwarmen in dit druilerige jaargetijde.
Tussen al dat geweld komt het eveneens geweldige Dead shall Rise van Terrorizer als een oude bekende langs, en voor je het goed en wel beseft is het afgelopen. Veel meer moet ik er niet over zeggen. Eén van de beste, zoniet het beste, death metal album van Belgische bodem van 2008 (met Fractured Insanity op een mooie tweede plaats). Death metal, met een sexy blackened kontje. Dan toch een vaderlands plaatje in mijn jaarlijst? Machtig, die koning! En wie vindt van niet mag vakkundig mijn balzakje kussen. Luistertips : Heap of Wretchedness en Hellkind (met een zalige Dark Funeral-vibe)!

de Vlaamse extreme metalscene is misschien niet gigantisch te noemen maar al bij al beschikken we toch over een aantal bands waarop we trots mogen zijn.The reckoning is een mooi voorbeeld van bikkelharde black/death metal die zich kan meten met heel wat buitenlands geweld.jarenlang gingen ze door het leven als infernal legion en speelden ze eerder licht melodieuze black metal.doorheen de jaren veranderde hun muziek redelijk sterk en ging de band een veel brutaler,door death metal beinvloed geluid ontwikkelen.het leek hen dan ook gepaster om een niewe doorstart te maken onder de naam The reckoning,een zet die werd ingehuldigd met het pittige debuut 'deathlike millennia' uit 2006.de plaat mocht op veel positieve respons rekenen en wordt nu opgevolgd door 'counterblast',een mokerhamer van een plaat.net als zijn voorganger werd ook deze schijf opgenomen in de poolse hertz studios,waar men al enige ervaring heeft met het genre vanwege bands als vader,behemoth,decapitated,... nodeloos te zeggen dat dit zijn vruchten afwierp,zeker?de hogesnelheidbeuknummers van The reckoning hebben er alle baat bij dat ze een droge,heldere productie meekregen,want anders zou één en ander zeker en vast in een brij verzanden.nu knalt het ding echter uit de boxen met haast dezelfde intensiteit als waneer het trio peter,styg en morbid op het podium staat en beuken ze je simpelweg song na song murw.de songs zijn goed opgebouwd dragen dan wel de stempel van morbid angel n behemoth,maar niettemin toont de band op 'counterblast' wel degelijk eigen smoelwerk.meestal speelt de band in 'blast'-stand,maar gelukkig weet de band te variëren door de inbreng van een heavy song als 'hellkind'.na negen eigen composities krijgen we als hekkensluiter trouwens nog The reckonings versie van terrorizers klassieker 'dead shall rise' en verdomme,ze doen het niet minder strak dan het origineel!het word hoog tijd dat The reckoning andere contreien verovert en met 'counterblast' op zak moet dat zeker lukken.

This is second release of Belgian band The Reckoning and I must say that, by the initial glance of this CD and its futuristic artwork, I thought that this will be some Zyklon, modern DM boring rip off band... But I was in for a big surprise indeed! The Reckoning certainly have clear and today’s (so to say) sound, but instead of ripping other bands off they have concentrated in ripping listeners’ heads off with this bomb of an album. „Counterblast“ features top notch brutal metal which can remind you from time to time on Vader, Hate and likes. Maybe that comparison is drawn from mighty Hertz Studios production (courtesy of Wieslawki brothers) who blessed many Polish bands with their clear yet aggressive sound, but most certainly you can feel those vibes here. „Counterblast“ have all the necessary ingredients for one cool DM release in my book – brutality but with enought tempo changes so that everything don’t turn into non-stop blast fest, nice ideas and worked-out songs, brutal and commanding but in the same time comprehensable vox and nihilistic, even from time to time blackish atmosphere. Lyrics fits the overall feeling and artwork is, as I said before, a bit futuristic. The last song on the album is one more pleasant surprise – it is „Dead Shall Rise“, cover of allmighty Terrorizer and The Reckoning have put it in their own style. All in all, maybe this is a bit short review but I feel that it is in vein of this album – not long and to the point. If you are into above mentioned bands, be sure to try out „Counterblast“. It is not the release that will rewrite the rules of extreme music, but the guys did this from their hearts who undoubtfuly crave for music in this vein.

Allow me to announce you The Reckoning as a first class Belgian Death Metal band. A strange way to start a review, I know, but the Belgian Metal scene needs support and plenty of Belgian Metal bands shouldn't be ashamed for what they're doing. I know, bands from Holland have always been more successful and respected but to me Belgium have always contained the best Metal bands! Not that there's a competition between both countries but too often Belgian musicians compare their possibilities with Dutch bands and get depressed by it. On the other hand reviewers are making the same mistake, ignoring the strength of our bands. Belgium has always been strong in extreme Metal, from the eighties until now. Not that Belgium became famous because of it although some eighties bands like Cyclone and Channel Zero are still wanted. Also in traditional Heavy Metal we knew outstanding formations and Ancient Rites is a good example of a first class band from the recent Metal era!
The Reckoning was formed in 1993 under the name of Infernal Legion and these guys always searched for the boundaries of extreme Metal. In those days Infernal Legion was a Black Metal band. During all those years the band got more focused on the technical approaches of Metal which was a main reason to change their name. ''Deathlike Millennia'', The Reckoning's debut, received worldwide good reviews and the fact this is a very technical band, using a very good studio sound, will be the main reason for it.
The opening track of this second CD makes this clear by blowing outrageous riffs and amazingly fast drums out of your speakers. A a matter of fact these ingredients are the red line for the entire CD. I can't really count how many hits on the snare are present on this album, I even doubt if someone can! Not that speed is always important; The Reckoning is progressive enough to change tempi. The Reckoning is brutal and vicious and at some points they even crossed the boundaries of extremity. Nevertheless I hear some outstanding technical guitar riffs and extraordinary solos. Especially at those mid tempo parts The Reckoning makes me enthusiast. The nastiness of these slower parts are mind blowing! To be honest I'm not always into these super fast drum parts...
Overall The Reckoning has an easy job convincing the listeners, especially if they're fans of bands like Morbid Angel, old Kreator, Vader and for example Deicide. This kind of viciousness is wanted, especially in the dark days we're living in. The grunts are fitting perfectly on this kind of music and more than once I even had the feeling listening to Death, still the best Death Metal band to me...
The Reckoning will easily damage your ears and I'm quite sure the 'Scale Of Richter' isn't ready for the earthquake these guys are responsible for. The Reckoning is explosive all over, creating a devastating wall of sound! An international career is, in my opinion, waiting for these guys. The Reckoning is not willing to compromise and their brutal way of playing Metal will be loved or hated. This is the newest generation of Belgian Metal bands and they're ready to write themselves into the Belgian page of Metal history. To me these guys are welcome at for example Graspop Metal Meeting because they're worth playing on those stages. This is one of the most professional Belgian releases I've heard in a long time...

Ah... Belgian metal, some of my favourite albums have come out of this small nation's obsession for heaviness and brutality in music. With that said... Belgian metal is just like a two sided sword. It is either cutting edge good and cuts into you with the slightest beat, or it just dulled and very lifeless music begging for to be put out of its misery. Which will it be for The Reckoning?
First off, this band have been around since 1993 (Originally named Infernal Legion) and they have had two demos, a full album and a mini album under this moniker. From what I remember of them, they were raw and quite brutal Black Metal. Now as they are called The Reckoning (with one LP under the name already) they seemed to have evolved into a tight melodic mixture of Black, Death and Thrash Metal that is leaps and bounds past their original sounds.
Simply put... this outfit (Three regular members, one guest bassist, they have found a new bassist now.) blasts out some of the most furious and demonically angry music. The blast away with great speed, but they show that there is great amounts of melody to go with it. Their riffs can be almost described as being catchy... because they are memorable as they are brutal.
Lyrics are growled out with the acridness of sulphuric acid, honed to a sharp perfection that spews darkness and the grotesque indignance toward pitiful human life. The song lyrics are short, but man they are massively good with what they use. Songs like 'Heap Of Wretchedness' and 'Hellkind' show both utter heaviness and speed that is matched up perfectly with this great sense of pure musicality as well.
The Reckoning are a force that is hard to ignore, yet they do not establish anything close to new here for the Black Metal world ... but they do create amazing metal that suits them. All of what is on the album seems points out the fact that they are evolving into a great band all on their own... and that is more than enough for me to enjoy them.

Belgium’s The Reckoning was formed under the moniker Infernal Legion back in 1993. They released a couple of demos, EPs and one full-length, until they changed their name in 2005. After that, the band became more prolific and released Deathlike Millennia in 2006 and its successor in 2008; the to be reviewed Counterblast.
One might know that a lot of quality albums are recorded in Hertz Studios in Poland. I’m talking about bands like Decapitated, Vader and Hate. The Reckoning made an excellent decision to travel to Poland to do exactly the same. From start till finish, this disc is one hell of a basher, of which I can easily say that this is one of the best Belgian extreme metal releases of 2008.
The production is, as can be expected, excellent. Not clean, but fat and grooving, simply terrific for its music. The Reckoning’s sound is a mix between a death metal version of Dutch thrashers Legion Of The Damned and Polish assaulting acts such as Vader. Strong riffage, ultra tight blastbeats and everything played as accurate as a time bomb. Add some black metal influences and an almost mechanic feel and also Hate is a serious comparison. Not bad for a band that originally started out as melodic black metal outfit.
If you’re not afraid of a lethal dose of tight blasts and utter groove, be sure to check out this killer record. Softies keep out!

metalstorm:Generally speaking I'm not really the type of guy who, unless completely necessary, overuses certain big words like "masterpiece" all the time. And I won't say the album at hand is a masterpiece, but we're coming pretty close. What we are dealing with here, ladies and gents, is certainly the cream of the cream (crème de la crème) when it comes to Belgian death metal releases of 2008, to say the very least. Indeed, "Counterblast", the newest album of The Reckoning is a mighty punch in the face when it comes to top-notch characteristic death metal - you can take my word on it.
This Belgian threesome (seriously, how is it possible to make such loud and heavy music with only three people
aren't exactly newcomers to the scene. The band started out as an underground melodic black metal band in 1993 under the moniker Infernal Legion, and took a fresh start at the beginning of 2006, meanwhile with a new name, a well-received "debut" album and a solid live reputation playing support shows for Morbid Angel, Vital Remains, Decapitated and Aborted (to name only a few) on their curriculum vitae. "Counterblast" is the band's latest achievement which will without hesitation give you a new reason to damage your ears with pleasure.
Indeed, this is exactly the kind of solid death metal one should nowadays be craving for, since as a matter of fact The Reckoning really have it all to be in one's good death metal book: tempo, rage and aggression; ponderous drumming with (for a change) appropriate blast beats; killer riffs and solos; many rhythmic breakdowns; a-typical yet harsh death metal vocal work; malevolent lyrics; a quality production (the Wieslawski brothers anyone and a boundless dark atmosphere with sometimes even a slim filthy black aftertaste. After one crushing half hour this powerful release abruptly ends in beauty with one last kick in the nuts: a finger-licking good cover of Terrorizer's "Dead Shall Rise".
Really, listening to "Counterblast" is like deliberately running at feel speed into a massive wall of death metal.
So perhaps The Reckoning aren't re-defining the principles of death metal. But then again no one was demanding them to; moreover the band already adopted a contemporary and intense approach to make their own. And perhaps "Counterblast" is no masterpiece either but it sure is a masterly showpiece of prevailing death metal. In short, it's nice to discover a distinguishing album once in a while that is like a breath of fresh air in the overpopulated world of death metal. I'm telling you, this is one to remember when you're making up your little "favorite albums of the year"-lists. I kid you not when I state that missing out on this one means missing out on one of the better (if not one of the best) death metal albums of the year... can you live with that thought?

Oef, mijn eerste reactie op het eerste echte lied van The Reckoning (intro niet meegerekend). Heavy shit, niet te doen. Death metal ten top! Wat een herrie, drums zijn ongelofelijk snel, het lijkt wel een drumcomputer. M’n benen gaan van genot mee bewegen. Als ik een vergelijking zou moet maken van verschillende bands zou ik Vader, Ministry, Slayer bij elkaar mixen. Ik weet het, allemaal top bands van verschillende genres, maar beste muziekliefhebbers, zo klinkt het ongeveer. Het is zeker één van de betere death platen van het jaar, Glenn Benton (Deicide) zou pips rond zijn neusje worden van deze vette schijf, en zou willen dat hij zo fris uit de hoek kon komen. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken: Shiver Records moet weer een gouden schijfje bij op zijn palmares zetten. Een leuk en vette bonus voor ons, de sympathieke fans, is de cover van Terrorrizer ‘Dead Shall Rise’ waar zanger Peter een vuile grunt produceert, lekker ter afwisseling. Valt jullie trouwens op dat de muziekindustrie van de Benelux weer springlevend is? Denk maar eens Axamenta, Dedicted, Theudo, Heidevolk, Battalion en Thurizas; allen draaien over het algemeen toch goed mee. Dus er is hoop, en de volgende generatie metalmuzikanten melden zich aan. Laat maar komen Grietje!!

Om de zoveel tijd duikt er een band op die een mens helemaal van de spreekwoordelijke sokken blaast. Die verrassing is des te leuker wanneer het gaat om een binnenlandse groep. Om maar te zeggen dat het vaderlandse The Reckoning verpulvert! Dit trio verliest geen tijd met balanceren op de grens tussen genres, maar kiest resoluut de kaart van extreme death metal, gebracht aan een bijzonder hoog tempo en met de nodige techniciteit. Als dit niet gaat knallen, dan is er iets mis met de metaalminnende mensheid. Een wel zeer korte intro gaat meteen over in blastfestijn 'Downward Discipline', waarbij de band meteen de blauwdruk legt voor de rest van het album: hyperkinetische drums (de dubbele basbarrages vliegen een mens werkelijk om de oren), loeiharde riffs die op gepaste momenten even gas terugnemen om daarna dubbel zo hard en dubbel zo effectief toe te slaan en boven dat alles de vrij schrille gifstrot van frontbeest Peter. Dankzij de droge en licht industrieel aandoende totaalklank van het album doet The Reckoning wat denken aan andere razernijspuiers als Zyklon, Exmortem of Myrkskog. Ook hier wordt het gaspedaal quasi constant ingeduwd en is er werkelijk nergens ruimte om even te bekomen. De sonische holocaust slaat toe en er zullen geen overlevenden getolereerd worden. 'Heap of Wretchedness' heeft tussen de agressie door een paar goedgeplaatste breakdowns, maar dan echte death metalbreakdowns en niet van die halfslachtige hardcorevarianten die iets te vaak gebezigd worden, met daarnaast nog een paar rake start-stopriffs en een soortement melodielijn die zich onherstelbaar in de gehoorgang boort. Die soms verstopte melodielijnen heeft het drietal misschien geleend van een band als Vader, maar de heren doen er gelukkig wel hun eigen ding mee. 'Hellkind' is voor hun doen verdacht subtiel, maar dat wil niet zeggen als zou het nummer plots rustiger zijn. Het tempo ligt misschien iets trager, maar de voorhamer wordt nog steeds met plezier gebruikt. Al wie houdt van snelle en brute death metal met een licht industriële insteek mag zonder twijfelen dit album meteen aan de boezem drukken. Anderen trouwens ook, want dit is niet zomaar een vaderlands death metalplaatje: dit is er eentje met internationale allure en klasse. Het valt enkel te hopen dat de heren ook de nodige kansen krijgen om dit waar te maken, want 'Counterblast' is een beest van een schijf!

Ik heb al geruime tijd naar deze CD uit zitten kijken want de vorige schijf ’Deathlike Millenia’ blies zowat de ballen uit mijn broek. De tweede CD ‘Counterblast’ kwam enkele maanden geleden al uit maar heeft juist onlangs onze burelen bereikt. Net als de eerder genoemde CD werd deze opgenomen in de Hertz Studio te Bialystok, (Polen) en werd geproduceerd en gemixt door Wojtek & Slawek Wieslawsky en The Reckoning.
Degenen die goede herinneringen hebben aan de eerste CD zullen dit werkstuk ook wel op waarde weten te schatten, maar anderen ook want dit is met neuslengtes voorsprong het beste Belgische death metal product van het jaar geworden. De composities zijn superbe, de opnamekwaliteit is uitstekend en het beluisteren van dergelijke muzikanten is een waar (o)orgasme! Deze elementen maken ‘Counterblast’ een uitstekend death metal album dat door iedereen die hellenkrochtenmuziek weet te waarderen gewaardeerd zal worden. Beluister ook eens de laatste track ‘Dead Shall Rise’, die werd gecoverd van de ondergewaardeerde band Terrorizer. Een dergelijke song goed te coveren, dat noem ik durf hebben. Following up on their impressive 2006 "Deathlike Millennia" debut Belgian combo The Reckoning deliver another misanthropic slab of violent, Polish sounding nihilistic death metal. Unlike most Belgian underground acts The Reckoning have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish and do it with conviction and gusto. Sounding somewhere alongside "Winds Of Creation" era Decapitated, "Revelations" era Vader (groove, slower thrashy parts) and "Awakening Of the Liar" era Hate (the blast sections) with occasional influences of mid-nineties Scandinavian black metal The Reckoning combine all of Poland's death metal strengths. The playing has become tighter and more focused while overall the technical skill has been pushed up a notch. The Reckoning can easily mentioned in the same breath as Aborted, Emeth or Prejudice. Recorded at the critically acclaimed Hertz Studios in Poland with revered producers Slawek and Wojtek Wieslawski "Counterblast" is graced with a massive sounding pristine production that we have come to expect from this studio. The artwork, design and lay-out by Tsjuder Design far more detailed, complex and elaborate than their debut "Deathlike Millennia". Closing this record is an interesting and faithful rendition of Terrorizer's classic grind anthem 'Dead Shall Rise'. Without a doubt one of the strongest Belgian genre albums of recent times.

I’ve heard my fair share of speed obsessed releases throughout the years and while a singular focus on briskness often has the effect of numbing the senses it can be quite the lethal tool when done right. Case and point: Belgium’s THE RECKONING, an outfit that seems content to pummel the listener into the ground with this blistering set of songs, all of which push the boundaries of unadulterated sonic speed. They hit the ground running on basically every single song with the blast quotient remaining comfortably in and around 250 bpm, and to my great pleasure it actually enhances the sound rather than impeding it.
They don’t bring anything revolutionary to the table but when the songs are executed with such palpable alacrity and qualms about originality become instantly moot. These Belgians have the riffs, the technical chops and enough solid arrangements to see them through and even though the intensity is utterly maniacal the songs remain uniformly catchy, whether it’s the one-two punch of “Downward Discipline” and “March To Your Death”, the brilliant “Hellkind”, or the stupendous cover of TERRORIZER’s “Dead Shall Rise” – it’s all gold. The fact that most of these songs don’t exceed the 5 minute mark also means that none of them overstay their welcome in any way – they come, see, pillage, and then leave triumphantly. The aforementioned “Hellkind” is especially great, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the consummate ease with which they switched back and forth between supercharged Death Metal, memorable Thrash breaks and even a very pronounced Black Metal section during the second half of the song. Imagine KRISIUN styled riffs, DARK FUNERAL type speed (and occasionally the vocal rasps as well) mixed with the odd (yet always effective) LAMB OF GOD groove during some of the sparse “slower” sections and you have THE RECKONING, a band that I will keep an eye on for quite some time based solely on the strength of this album.
Bottom line: do everything in your power to acquire a copy of “Counterblast” ASAP, as this is some of the most finely executed speed-fests I’ve heard in a long time. This is pretty much a textbook definition of extreme Metal. The Reckoning is upon us and total submission is not an option but a bloody foregone conclusion!

Het gebeurt me wel vaker dat ik bij een concert een CD toegestopt krijg met het verzoek deze te bespreken in Aardschok, maar het gebeurt me niet elke dag dat dat dan zo'n beetje de beste Belgische death metal-cd van de laatste tien jaar blijkt te zijn! En neen ik vind niet dat ik overdrijf. The Reckoning laat op zijn tweede CD 'Counterblast' namelijk een ijzersterke mix van Morbid Angel, Vader een beetje Slayer en een heel klein beetje black metal horen, wat de zeer internationaal klinkende death metral een klein zwart randje geeft. Tel daarbij de beukende, maar zeer heldere productie, de zeer agressieve zang van gitarist Peter en het vermogen om goede, pakkende songs te schrijven op, en je kan niet anders dan concluderen dat de band met 'Counterblast' gewoon een voltreffer aflevert, die menig geremommeerde band het nakijken geeft. Niet alleen de Benelux, maar heel Europa is met The Reckoning een dijk van een death metalband rijker. De CD wordt afgesloten met een geslaagde cover van Terrorizers "Dead Shall Rise", maar het zijn de eigen songs die het hem doen op 'Counterblast'.

In 1993, Infernal Legion was formed, performing a mixture of Death, Black and Thrash Metal. In 2005, the current moniker was baptised and a first album, Deathlike Millennia, was released in 2006. Like that former one, Counterblast was recorded at the Polish Hertz Studio, where other Belgian names did work (Suhrim, Emeth), with Wojtek and Slawek Wieslawski. I did like Infernal Legion a lot, yet this band has nothing to do anymore with that former one. I did also like The Reckoning’s debut and I’m glad to hear that this band still rages with blasting aggression and merciless fury. The ‘happy’ lyrics fit exactly to the pounding madness. The ultra-heaviness is extremer than on the debut (!) and gets perfectly supported by the full, massive sound. A few slower passages show a darker side of the band, but speed still is the main theme. The album ends with a very acceptable version of Terrorizer’s Dead Shall Rise, by the way. Duration: 39:20 minutes.

The history of the Belgian extreme metal band The Reckoning goes back to 1993. In this year a band called Infernal Legion was formed and released till 2004 two demo’s, two EP’s and one full-lenght album. In 2004 this band changed their name into The Reckoning and released in 2006 their first full-lenght under this name, called Deathlike Millennia.
Now in 2008 The Reckoning released their second album called Counterblast to the world. This beast is more of a mature kind than it’s predecessor. The brutal assault of death metal, the rawness and filth of black metal and the devastation of thrash metal is combined into a strong and almost perfect mix. There are legions of influences in this band. The first thing that got stuck in my mind was, this is Vader that is swamped with black and thrash metal. A strong production comes from the Hertz Studio’s in Poland. The raw and filthy vocals of Peter Noens makes the music even more aggressive and violent then it already is. As a dessert we get Dead shall Rise from Terrorizer.
Although the music is nowhere original, but who fucking cares when you get this mixture of styles and strong material with a production and sound like this. Again this year, Belgium shows us what it got to ruin the world.

Het is en blijft een spijtige zaak wanneer een sterk album zijn verdiende aandacht niet krijgt. Dat gebeurde helaas met het debuut van The Reckoning. “Deathlike Millennia” mocht dan wel positieve reacties van de pers in ontvangst nemen, veel groots heeft het spijtig genoeg niet veroorzaakt. De band kreeg blijkbaar ook niet veel volk te zien tijdens hun CD presentatie van hun nieuwe “Counterblast”. Geen idee wat de reden daarvoor mag zijn en na het beluisteren van dit album zal het je zeker niet duidelijker worden. Ja, dit trio heeft weeral een ultiem death/black metal product afgeleverd. Als je bekend bent met hun eerste werk, zul je merken dat dit er gewoonweg een geslaagde renovatie van is. De productie is er sterk op vooruit gegaan en de band klinkt sterker dan ooit tevoren. De niet meest vanzelfsprekende hoge vocalen voor hun muzikale richting zijn echt een standvast kenmerk geworden en de steeds knallende blastbeats blijven ook niet weg. Net zoals groepen als Vader die je ter gedachte komen bij het beluisteren van dit is The Reckoning een band die je niet snel wilt zien veranderen. Uiteraard zijn wat, al dan niet subtiele, veranderingen volgende keer welkom, maar als fan van een snel en vinnig death/black metal mengsel kan je hier moeilijk ‘nee’ tegen zeggen.

Wow! Shiver heeft met deze schijf puur goud in handen. Hopelijk kunnen ze dit op de overvolle markt goed aan de man brengen. Op zich zou deze kwaliteitsmuziek voor zichzelf moeten werken. Deze oude rotten in het vak brengen met "Counterblast" ongetwijfeld het beste werkstuk in hun lange loopbaan uit. De sound is overweldigend. Deze schijf is opgenomen in Polen in de 'Hertz' studio's en dit is de beste zet die men kon doen. Met alle respect, maar mochten deze nummers zijn opgenomen in ons kikkerlandje, men zou niet tot dit resultaat komen. De nummers knallen werkelijk de boxen uit en zijn vergelijkbaar met de stevige Vader sound. Natuurlijk is het de sound niet alleen die telt, de nummers en bijgevolg songwriting primeren boven alles. En dat dit dik in orde is hoeft niet meer gezegd te worden. Dankzij de jarenlange ervaring weet men perfect hoe men een nummer moet neerpennen. Dit is death metal op zijn best! Verder zou ik een pluim willen steken in het gat van drummer Morbid. Hoe die hier tekeergaat als een losgeslagen wild beest... Dit is geen mens, maar een strakke moordmachine! Daarnaast ervaar ik de vocalen van Peter als héél positief. Geen diep onverstaanbaar gegrom, maar oeragressieve vocalen die eerder neigen naar ruige thrash. Perfect! Hou je van de intensiteit en agressiviteit van een Vader en Legion Of The Damned, dan kan je niet om deze schijf heen. Hopelijk weet Shiver de juiste kanalen te benaderen om deze schijf op de juiste manier te ondersteunen. Het zou te jammer zijn om deze cd stilletjes in de anonimiteit te laten verdwijnen.
