clairedelune49's description of this song:
This dark song from his later years (1968) Brel considered his finest lyric, the most like "real" French poetry. It's a study of the quiet desperation of stagnant small Belgian town, the frustrations of its gloomy petit bourgeoisie, finally its wish to be a port, bustling and full of life and activity. Brel appears almost motionless in white against a dark background making a stark video image. This is the only song where he used an ethereal female chorus to create an other wordly effect. The only positive image,"Summer has its grand masses and the night celebrates them." is the most often quoted from this song.
